PVC Roofing: Environmental Benefits

PVC is a widely used and well-known safe material in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, packaging, and construction worldwide. Its behavior and lifecycle in different conditions are well understood. RENOLIT ALKORPLAN single-ply PVC waterproofing membrane has a long lifespan and uses significantly fewer non-renewable resources in its production compared to traditional waterproofing solutions.

Why is PVC the sustainable solution for roofing?

Recylability: PVC can be recycled up to 7 times keeping the same properties. RENOLIT ALKORPLAN membranes include from 20% to 60% of reworked materials, thus reducing the need for raw materials.

Long lifespan: Roofs waterproofed with PVC membranes are well known for their durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions, chemicals and fire. This means they can last for many years with delayed need for a replacement.

Lighter coloured PVC roofs reflect more solar rays: Light coloured PVC roofs have high solar reflectance, which contributes to energy efficiency and reduction of CO2 emissions.

Recycling of PVC waterproofing membrane

The RENOLIT ALKORPLAN single-ply PVC waterproofing membane is recyclable and it has been recycled in Central Europe for a long time. At the end of its lifecycle, the PVC roofing installed is collected, crushed, and recycled into new raw material.

The RENOLIT Group recycles over 8 million kilograms of PVC materials annually. It is a member of the European Single Ply Waterproofing Association (ESWA), which has developed a common roofing recycling system called Roofcollect.

Energy efficiency with Cool Roofs

As climate change affects the environment, the color of the roof is becoming increasingly important.

The heat absorbed through the roof raises cooling requirements, especially in larger buildings.

A Cool Roof with a white single-ply PVC waterproofing membrane reflects sunlight, reducing the need for interior cooling and thereby lowering CO2 emissions.
Additionally, it helps maintain a more stable and comfortable indoor climate. This can also contribute to earning additional points for building environmental certifications such as BREEAM.

The reflected sunlight from white PVC waterproofing membrane is also highly beneficial when installing solar panels on the roof.

EPD (Environmental Product Declaration)

The RENOLIT Group is committed to producing building materials in sustainable way. According to an independently verified and registered EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) statement, the lifecycle environmental impact of RENOLIT ALKORPLAN single-ply PVC waterproofing membrane is lower than that of traditional double-layer bitumen membranes.

In summary, it's clear that that embracing new methods should guide decisions in roofing solutions. When evaluating different options, single-ply PVC stands out as the top performer in many aspects.
